The key steps to finding purpose

From a young age, we are told to stay within our limitations.

We are told to not go against the norm.

Don't do anything that goes outside of the comfort zone they say.

Which is total and utter bullshit.

Human nature is a non-negotiable and so is growth.

We as humans have a major role to play on this earth.

And it is up to oneself to find out what his/her purpose is!

  • Purpose

  • Passion

  • Mission

  • Vision

Will not be found in playing small, or filling a role that is not true to one's nature.

I learnt this the hard way through high school.

I hated school, I never learnt anything constructive other than:

  • How to throw fruit at teachers

  • Putting tacks on teachers' chairs

  • Being late to the bus every morning

  • Spending all my money at the canteen

When you are in a place like this it makes you second-guess one's existence.

Being a 16-year-old kid doing subjects that I had no interest in, I was then forced to look at other options.

One of my good friends at the time was doing a plumbing apprenticeship, so being the young naïve 16-year-old kid I was, I decided to pursue that.

I thought this would be a great option.

But by not understanding what my core strengths and weaknesses were, I was going into a role that didn't match my nature.

I don't regret anything in life, but I do believe that if I had been educated on:

  • Strengths

  • Weaknesses

  • Curiosities

I probably would have gone in a different direction.

Each human being is different and has different strengths and weaknesses and it's hard for that human being to excel and grow if they are in a role that doesn't allow that!

When one doesn't pursue his/her curiosities one doesn't realise what is out there for them to achieve.

I have an ex-client of mine who went through quite a transformational period last year, where he worked in the mines in Western Australia, solely for cash.

This seemed like a great idea at the time, but he reached a point where he lacked purpose, passion, mission and vision.

I remember chatting to him on the phone and he sounded defeated.

Mind you this guy had just travelled the world for 3+ years.

So to go from living such an adventurous life pursuing his curiosities, too being in an environment where he was solely working for money, became a slippery slope.

Humans are not supposed to be confined to the rules and regulations society places on us:

We all have much more to give:

  • Our strengths

  • Our weaknesses

  • Our curiosities

  • Our purpose

  • Our mission

  • Our vision

This client ended up breaking free of these rules and regulations and has now recruited a team of like-minded individuals, who are now building a school in Nepal.

I don't share this client story to pump his tyres up, I share this story to show that you can too change the direction of your life, you can too do something great with your life:

  1. Pursuing your curiosities

  2. Focusing on your strengths

  3. Identify your weaknesses

  4. Pushing these through to completion

Life is always evolving and nature doesn't just optimise for you, it optimises for the whole.

When you start to adapt to this mindset you can start to move in your preferred direction in life.

Nature will always reward the brave.

So what are you waiting for, it's time to get after it.

We've touched on weaknesses and I feel this is the most important part of your life you should delve into.

Why you ask?

Well because when you can foster open and honest communication with others to bring out where you are weak, this opens up opportunities for you:

  • Work on this weakness

  • Or connect with someone strong where you are weak

This is specifically great for building a business as one will always balance out the other.

Depending on who you liaise with.

You don't need to beat yourself down and look at all areas of your life that you are weak.

Just identify one and start to think about ways you can work on it.

You can do this by pursuing:

  • Books

  • Online lectures

  • Courses

  • Podcasts

There are many great ways to work on your weaknesses, but my recommendation would be to start with a book.

If you don't want to work on your weakness this is where you find someone who is strong where you are weak:

  • Mentor

  • Friend

  • Family member

  • Colleague

One thing I would like to highlight here is to be overly cautious with bringing family into the mix.

In the past, I have gone to specific family members for advice and it made my situation worse than it should have been.

So ask yourself before you approach this family member.

Are they believable?

And have they worked on their weaknesses?

At the end of the day, you're not going to get everything right, but by being curious about your weaknesses, you can start to see a side of life you may have not been aware of.

Now let's look at bringing your strengths to life, I'm sure this one will light you the fuck up.

There are multiple tests and quizzes out there that you can take to identify your strengths, the first place I would start if I were you, is asking yourself!

What are my strengths?

You can do all the tests and quizzes in the world, but if you haven't even asked yourself this one question then anything external outside your life is not going to give you the answers.

Look back on your past:

  • What have you done right?

  • What have you done wrong?

  • What situations do you do well in?

You must reflect on your history because 9 times out of 10 your answer will lie there.

Were told not to live in the past, but if you don't look back on what worked and what didn't, there's no way you'll be able to identify where your strengths are because you'll be stuck on autopilot.

As you see above I spoke about quizzes and tests that you can do.

Once you have asked yourself all these questions, the test I would recommend taking is the Myers-Briggs Test.

This test goes into great depth about your personality and will ask you some questions that you may or may have not been asked before in your life.

This life that we live is such a beautiful life and it becomes even more beautiful when you start on the self-discovery path.

When you start to pursue your:

  • Weaknesses

  • Weaknesses

  • Strengths

  • Curiosities

And then push them through to completion.

Life will then start to open up for you.

Once again I appreciate you all reading this newsletter and be sure to share it with a friend who may benefit.

Have a great start to the week and reach out if you have any questions!
