How to get out of your own way

Three years ago, I remember staring out of my one-bedroom apartment in rainy Ascot Vale and thinking to myself, Is this really it?

I had finally landed one of the highest-paying jobs in the plumbing industry and was working with an amazing company, which had taken me nine years to get.

But there was something inside me that felt lost—that felt like I wasn't going to be there long-term.

I loved the guys I worked with.

I enjoyed the work itself, but I knew I was destined for more.

One Saturday morning, I was down at one of the local coffee shops with a journal and a pen with the title at the top of the page stating, “What Next?.”

The next word I wrote down was when my life took a complete turn, which was "mentor."

I had always seen people on social media talking about mentors, but I'd never really thought about investing in one.

From that moment on, I began to research the term mentor.

I began to search high and wide online to see who I could find, and to be fair, I couldn't find one that aligned.

That day, I felt quite disheartened because I was feeling more and more lost.

I went back up to my apartment and sat on the couch for the afternoon, contemplating what my life was going to turn out like.

You can imagine the emotions I was feeling, which included

  • Overwhelm

  • Anxiety

  • Stress

And many more.

A few days later, a guy I had followed on Instagram reached out to me.

I was skeptical at first as to why this person had messaged me out of the blue; clearly, there was a reason, a reason that was yet to be uncovered.

I replied to him, thanking him for his message, and we began to chat about life goals.

After that day, I agreed to meet with him to discuss potential coaching options.

We caught up the following week, and as I met him, I knew this was the path I needed to take, so I signed up then and there.

I finally felt like I had some sort of direction in my life.

I finally felt I could start to live life on my own terms while doing the things I love.

I won't claim that it was all easy and positive; navigating the challenges of investing in a mentor, launching a business, and juggling a full-time night shift job was incredibly demanding.

But I knew I was on the right path.

I know how tough it can be to work a job that doesn't fulfil you, wake up in the morning feeling unmotivated and lacking life direction, and feel like a lazy human being.

But as humans, we are a lot more powerful than we think, and we are definitely a lot more powerful than our own limiting beliefs that have been instilled in us.

Where you are now is not where you are going to be in 6 months unless you are willing to make a change.

You don't have to stay working for the same employer.

You can start your own business, and you can start your journey to self-improvement.

Business is not something that gets talked about enough, especially if you are in the construction industry.

You're made to think that it's always stressful and never to be pursued.

These things may be somewhat true, but there are also tremendous benefits to running a business.

Which include:

  1. Working on your own terms

  2. Building out projects that have meaning for you

  3. Making more money than a 9-to-5 job

  4. Traveling the world

  5. Building a business that can eventually be franchised

There will come a point in your life where you will need to make a shift, and making that shift when you have financial priorities like mortgages, car loans, and all the rest of it is going to be a lot harder than if you were to do it now.

So, what are you waiting for?

As I stated above, investing in a mentor was one of the best decisions I made in my life.

The mentor guided me through the process.

The mentor helped with my mindset and helped me build a profitable business, which I had no clue how to do or where to start.

It's always positive to find someone who has achieved the life that you are looking to achieve, piggyback off their own challenges, and dive into the unique set of resources that they can offer you.

I have now helped over 100 clients around the world achieve their personal and professional goals.

Why can't you be next?

As we go through the schooling system, we are told to get a job and stay at that company for years on end and not challenge the status quo.

We were never shown how to identify our

  • Our Strengths

  • Our Weaknesses

  • Or our values.

And that's when they are left up to the employer we start with.

Most companies don't sit you down and ask you these questions.

You sign on the dotted line, begin your first day, and learn as you go.

But see, with a mentor, they do ask you these questions.

They start to ask you questions that align with who you want to become.

Our core values are a set of unique systems that should be lived by day in and day out.

And this is no wonder you are not enjoying your work, as you are not living within these means.

Knowing your values is a great starting point and will help you start to align yourself with a new mindset.

The current mindset you have has served you up until this point, but to get to the next level, you are going to have to change something.

I find most of my clients get disheartened when they discover this because they quickly realise that society has placed limits and barriers on them and start to regret their past decisions.

The thing is, you should not regret your past because all the lessons you have learned up to date are going to serve you in the long run; you just don't know it yet.

“You don't know what you don't know.”.

So now let's look at understanding you and your future business.

First, we need to understand you before we can start to understand what your business will look like, and this will start with self-improvement.

It will start with rewiring your mindset so you can see new opportunities and new ways of being.

This is when we start to look at what your current routines and daily habits look like and make the adjustments necessary to match them with your new lifestyle.

We will start to look at implementing one or all five of these:

  1. Writing a daily to-do list

  2. Exercising in the morning

  3. Implementing meditation

  4. Daily self-reflections

  5. Reading 10 pages

There are many ways that we can attack this, but it all comes down to what will work for you.

There is no one size fits all; it is all trial and error.

What may work for you may not work for someone else, and this is the beauty of self-improvement.

As your mindset starts to grow, we can start to look at what your business model will look like.

Your business will match your core values.

Your business will match the impact that you want to have on this world.

But most of all, your business will match your mindset.

I recently read a quote by Dr. Joe Dispenza that goes like this: “To create a new personal reality, a new life, we must create a new personality; we must become someone else.”

Let that sink in.

What does that mean to you?

I'll tell you what it means to me.

To develop an improved personality, you need to look at what your life currently is and be open and honest with yourself about what is not working.

This can be tough because, possibly for the first time in your life, you need to self-reflect.

The problems and struggles that we have in our lives are a great opportunity for us to go within and start to uncover the parts of ourselves that do not serve us anymore.

  • It's confronting

  • It's tough

  • It's challenging

But most of all, it is fucking liberating.

When we let go of the self-doubt and self-belief that we have been living with, we can start to step into our true essence and become the best version of ourselves.

So as we begin to wrap things up, let's look at how you can take action on what you have just learned.

Start by asking one or all of these questions and getting radically open and honest with yourself.

  • What does my dream life look like?

  • What business would I like to start?
